By: Rosalia B. Cabalza

March 05 -06, 2015 – The first year students together with the faculty of College of Allied health Sciences and College of Hospitality industry and management were taken out of their regular classes to witness and learn in the Earthquake and Fire Safety seminar held in the Cagayan State University Gymnasium. An over – all count of 600 participants including the faculty were taught by professionals on the safety measures in the face of the said events. Experts from Bureau of Fire Protection and Office of the Civil Defense came over to orient us with what they do and equip us with the knowledge we must have to survive tragedies related to fire and earthquakes.

Prof Elsa Caliguiran, the mistress of the ceremony started the event with her ecstatic voice, a prayer was offered and shortly the national anthem. Dr. Julius T. Capili the Dean of the College astounded the audience with his welcoming remarks as he reminded the students that these kind of seminars are needed for the improvement of every responsible youth of today. The Chief on Operations,  Inspector Franklin Tabingo grace also the occasion with a very inspiring message.

The students were so inspired as part of the crowd as they found out that the ladies in the team are Registered nurses and Medical Technologists. The speakers were not only well rounded but were humorous as they cracked jokes in their assigned lectures to keep the crowd alive. After the lectures, an open forum was also conducted to clarify queries in the audience.

The afternoon session of day 1 was also equally interesting session since we had with us equally intelligent speakers from the office of Civil Defense

The second day was a rigorous activity since this was a simulation activity of the concepts and theories lectured on the first day. The students were grouped into 15 and were given instructions before the simulation activity. Student leaders from the two departments were also given special tasks. After the short briefing then started the evaluation of the performance of the students as well as the faculty members of the two colleges.

Into our surprise, with the very limited resources that we had and of course the lack of trained students we managed to passed the evaluation given by the Office of Civil Defense. Truly, it was a learning –filled activity!
